Genome Valley has been granted registration for the certification mark (intellectual property rights) by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) from its headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia. The Andhra Pradesh chapter of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) said in a statement that its technology development and promotion centre (APTDC) with the support of the state government had been working on the registration for the project since 2003. more...

The Intellectual Property Appellate Board (IPAB), which is hearing the appeal against the Indian patent office’s decision to not allow patent protection for Swiss drug maker Novartis’s anti-cancer drug Glivec in India, has deferred the hearing to July 10, 2007. The case came up for hearing before IPAB in Chennai and the respondents in the case, including the Central Government and the Indian companies like Cipla, Hetero Drugs and Ranbaxy, have asked the Board to retain S Chandrasekhar, former Controller General of Patents as technical member to hear the case. more...

Manufacturers of International brand 'Blue Label' and 'Black and White' Scotch Whisky have approached the Delhi High Court to protect their well-established trademark and trade dress from being infringed. Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul of the Delhi HC has directed Goa-based Real Food Exporters Pvt Ltd to stop the manufacturing, sale or advertisement in any form of the malt whisky, 'Real Black', which is alleged to be a similar version of Black and White, while Blue Label is alleged to be a copied version of Johnnie Walker Blue Label, till the next date of hearing. more...

The Central Crime Branch police seized pirated copies of audio and video DVDs of the recently released Tamil film 'Sivaji'. On a tip-off that audio and video DVDs were sold at Kumaran Colony in Vadapalani, the police conducted a raid and secured C. Raviraj. Interrogation revealed that he got the copies from Puduchery. US-based Medpointe Healthcare Inc has sued India’s Sun Pharmaceuticals in a US court in late June for alleged patent infringement of its anti-allergic ophthalmic drug, Optivar. Medpointe Healthcare, in its suit filed at the district court of Delaware, informed the court that the company is the sole owner of the 194 patent titled azelastine containing medicaments and have the right to sue and to recover for any infringement of the patent. more...
