About the Role: We are looking for a detail-oriented and technically proficient Associate to join our Patent team at Lall & Sethi. The role focuses on patent searching and prosecution support for chemical, agrochemical and pharmaceutical innovations, including small molecules, formulations, process chemistry, and advanced materials.
This opportunity is ideal for Ph.D. or postdoctoral professionals in Chemistry/life sciences who are interested in transitioning into the IP domain and building a long-term career at the intersection of science, technology, and law.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct high-quality patentability, freedom-to-operate (FTO), validity/invalidity, and landscape searches in the chemistry and pharmaceutical domains
Analyze patent and non-patent literature using tools such as: STN, SciFinder, Orbit, Google Patents or Chemical structure and reaction-search platforms: (substructure/similarity searching)
Evaluate and compare chemical structures, reaction schemes, Markush claims, and formulation components
Draft and present technical search reports with clear, actionable insights for internal and client use
Support patent drafting and prosecution under the guidance of senior team members or attorneys
Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. or Postdoctoral experience in Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Materials Science, or related fields
1–3 years of experience in patent searching
Proficiency with chemical structure search tools
Familiarity with patent and scientific research tools
High attention to detail and a strong interest in chemical innovation and IP strategy
Strong analytical skills and technical/scientific writing ability
Preferred Skills:
Understanding of Markush structures, chemical claim formats, and chemistry-specific patent drafting styles
Exposure to prosecution workflows, including office action analysis and drafting
Knowledge of small molecule patent considerations, including novelty, inventive step, and claim scope
Prior experience supporting IP work in pharma, chemical R&D, specialty chemicals, or materials science

Overview: Responsible for managing patent filings, prosecution, client portfolios and paralegal team, with strong focus on documentation accuracy and deadline compliance.
Key Responsibilities:
Prepare and file patent applications, Forms, FER responses, written submissions, and annuities.
Track FERs, hearings, examination reports, and patent certificates.
Manage client portfolios, docketing, deadlines, and communication.
Oversee paralegal team workflow, quality, and process adherence.
Maintain records, schedules, correspondence, and documentation.
Requirements:
Stable profile with 5–8 years of patent paralegal experience, with minimum 3 years as a Patents (Paralegal) Manager or Team Leader.
Strong understanding of patent filing/prosecution procedures.
Hands-on experience with Registry e-filing systems and Anaqua or similar docketing tools.
Excellent drafting, coordination, and organizational skills.
Proficiency in MS Office and docketing tools.
Salary Range: Depending on expertise, prior experience, and performance in the technical interview round.
